Are we pressing too much at U8?

Our group is very aggressive without the ball and the first player will chase the keeper or defender immediately. It wins us loads of goals, which is probably why everyone likes it, but I am starting to wonder whether we are rewarding constant chasing rather than helping them recognise when to go and when to recover. How much detail would you give them at this age?

Why don't we show coach names?
The chasing is not the problem by itself. The question is whether they are learning anything beyond “run at the ball”. At U8 I would keep the detail very light. The first player can go and affect the ball, but can the others get back into the game and help? If the first press gets beaten, what happens next? Small 3v3 or 4v4 games are enough to work on that. You do not need pressing triggers and team schemes. I’d also be careful how much you celebrate goals that come from the keeper being rushed into a mistake. If all the praise is about winning it high and scoring, the players quickly learn that constant chasing is what the adults value. Keep the energy. Just start helping them notice that good defending can also mean slowing an attack down and helping a teammate.

I would keep the aggression but start praising the second player getting into a position to help. Ours thought defending meant first one there wins it.

We were winning loads of balls high and thought our press was brilliant. Then we played a team who passed around the first chaser and we realised nobody behind him knew what to do.

This was us too. Training rule was almost telling them when to press, so they looked miles better there than in the actual game.
