How do you coach runs across a defender rather than away from them?

Our attackers often move into space that is technically free but makes the pass harder because the defender can see both ball and runner. I want them to recognise when a run across the defender's line creates an advantage. Is that too much detail for U11?

Why don't we show coach names?
No, I do not think it is too much detail if you coach the picture simply. If the attacker runs away in the same direction the defender is facing, the defender can often see everything. A run across the defender can force them to turn, block their path or lose sight of the ball for a moment. I would show it in a 2v1 or 3v2 rather than explaining it for five minutes. Let the passer and runner see how the passing lane changes. A useful cue is: “Can your run make the defender choose between you and the ball?” At U11, movement can become more intentional without becoming scripted. Teach what the run does to the defender, then let players decide when that run is actually useful.

2v1 is enough. show run across defender then let them find it.

As a player the best runs are often the ones that make the defender turn their hips. Once they turn, the passer suddenly has a different window.

I would start with the defender's body. If they can see runner and ball together, the run has not asked much of them. Crossing their line changes the decision.

That is a clearer way to coach it than talking about crossing runs. Give them the defender picture and the movement makes sense.
